Nurturing and retaining legal talent

From a standing start 5 years ago, Leonard Curtis Legal has gone from being a market newcomer to an 18-strong team, including 11 solicitors with expertise ranging across corporate, commercial, real estate, dispute resolution and restructuring. We are surprised and delighted with both our ability to attract high quality candidates and to deliver steady but significant growth over a short period of time. We have recently taken stock of our position in the market and are now focussed on the next five years and how we build on the growth taking our people with us to the next stage of our development.

To meet the increase in demand for our services, were embarking on a significant recruitment drive and have recently made some important hires in our key areas which further strengthens our already heavyweight team. As these service specialisms grow, were looking to make further appointments and were excited that we are now in a position to train and develop our own pipeline of junior lawyers, with our first trainee solicitor joining us this October.

Take a look at our recent Life at LC: Working at Leonard Curtis Legal video.

We have been able to attract great talent by offering a flexible working environment without the numerous and often challenging KPIs and targets that are common within bigger practices. We were offering flexible working before the pandemic, so when it came it made very little difference to the way in which our firm and its people had been operating.

The pandemic has also made people think hard about their careers in this sector, with many senior professionals turning down offers of partnership and demanding more flexible working. This change in emphasis is working in our favour as we are able to offer a very different environment where talented lawyers can flourish without the constraints often imposed in larger firms, and where all of our people are tasked with driving our business forward. Being part of Leonard Curtis means that we combine in-house case work alongside our colleagues across all disciplines with standalone commercial services to our own external client base. Our people tell us that they find this hybrid structure, combined with the variety of work and client base, to be very appealing. No day is ever the same.

We offer excellent promotion prospects to our new recruits, so they can develop their careers rapidly. This makes Leonard Curtis Legal an ideal environment for those lawyers who have a genuine appetite to develop. We have examples of people who have risen quickly through the ranks to director level and some of those lawyers are now shareholders with the Group.

Many of the larger firms have big teams, which provide little opportunity for promotion and variety of work. This makes it all too easy to be side-lined when it comes to moving up the career ladder, not to mention being pigeon-holed in a very niche area, making it near impossible to gain valuable rounded experience.

The bright, ambitious and hungry lawyers that we are employing at Leonard Curtis Legal simply dont want this. Ites why they choose to join us. We have all joined this firm because we were attracted by doing something different and challenging the status quo.
