The best New Year Resolution for any business? Organise your finances and prepare for a brighter future.

According to Danielle Shore, a director with the Sheffield office of insolvency and business turnaround specialists Leonard Curtis, the most important tasks for the new year are to review and plan your business goals.

And that means being fully aware of any potential pitfalls and responding accordingly.

“Business owners who have their VAT quarter ending in November and December know that there will be a bill to pay in January or February and they need to be prepared for that,” she explained.

“That means they should be planning their cash flow very carefully to make sure they can deal with their tax liabilities, not putting the thought out of their mind and hoping it will disappear.

“It is far better to discuss ways of ring fencing any HMRC debt to ensure it doesn’t have a negative impact moving forward and then you can channel your energies into the positives of planning for growth.

At the same time, Danielle added, there is also plenty of support available to help ease the way into a more successful trading period.

“There are a full range of options that we can utilise, particularly as part of a multi-disciplinary business, to help people manage business and financial problems they may be facing.” She explained.

“As a company, we pride ourselves on helping businesses to survive and to turn around,” she said.

Exploring opportunities for growth is also as important if you are looking ahead to the next stage in your business lifecycle - that might mean looking at new potential for investment in your business - you might be surprised at the level of support that is available.

“This is a time to be proactive, to get out there and work with advisers invested in you and your business.”

“With any business plans you are looking to put in place, the key message from us is early planning – whether that’s looking at distress indicators or growth plans”.
