It has been a busy start to 2026 for the Business Advisory team. Specialising in negotiating HMRC Time to Pay (TTP) arrangements, the team closed Q1 with a 100% success rate, agreeing all 55 arrangements they were engaged to pursue and helping clients restructure a combined £17.3 million in HMRC arrears.

The cases handled this quarter reflect the full spectrum of UK businesses the team supports. Individual debts ranged from £39,000 to £2 million, and repayment periods were tailored to each client's circumstances. The overall average arrangement length was 49 months, while businesses with debts under £350,000 benefited from an average term of 56 months, demonstrating that HMRC will accommodate extended schedules where a well-evidenced, professionally prepared proposal is presented.

Whilst HMRC continues to take an increasingly proactive stance on debt recovery, viable businesses facing short-term cashflow pressures can still access meaningful relief through a TTP arrangement. The key is acting early. Engaging specialist support at the first sign of difficulty gives businesses the best possible chance of securing affordable repayments without placing undue strain on day-to-day operations.

Many businesses choose to approach HMRC directly, and it is entirely possible to do so. However, without a structured and evidenced proposal, applications are frequently declined or result in repayment terms too short to be sustainable.

This is where our Business Advisory team adds real value. As experts on handling TTP cases, the team knows how to construct a proposal that addresses HMRC's assessment criteria before they are raised, presenting a clear account of how the arrears arose, a realistic view of the business's financial position, and a credible repayment schedule that stands up to scrutiny. The 100% success rate achieved in Q1 is a direct result of that rigour and expertise.

If you or a client is facing HMRC arrears, early action opens up the most options. For support, please get in touch with the team.
