National Apprenticeship Week is the perfect moment to shine a light on just how powerful apprenticeships can be. They offer structured learning, real responsibility and the chance to build a meaningful career while adding real value from day one, and that’s not limited to entry-level roles.
At Leonard Curtis, we’re proud to champion apprenticeships at every stage – from entry-level AAT through to Level 7 leadership development. I’d encourage anyone considering this route, whether you’re starting out, changing direction, or looking to step up, to explore what’s possible.
Having spent my career recruiting at all levels, I’ve seen first-hand how apprenticeships benefit both candidates and employers. So, if you’re thinking about applying, here are a few things to focus on:
⭐Do your homework on the industry and role
Go beyond the job title. Understand the day-to-day tasks, skills you’ll develop, progression routes and what “good” looks like in that profession. This not only helps you choose the right programme, it shows employers you’re serious and motivated.
⭐Sell your transferable skills (even if your CV feels light)
You don’t need years of experience to stand out. Draw on school, college, Uni projects, part-time work, sports, volunteering or hobbies. Communication, teamwork, resilience, problem-solving and curiosity all count – employers are looking for potential and attitude as much as experience.
⭐Prepare for interviews and assessments
Many apprenticeship processes include competency questions, practical tasks or group exercises. Think of clear examples where you’ve shown initiative, dealt with challenges or learned something new quickly. The more you practise talking about these, the more confident and memorable you’ll be on the day.
Apprenticeships are a powerful way to learn, earn and grow – whatever stage you’re at. If you’re considering your next career step and want to understand how an apprenticeship could fit into your development, I’d be happy to chat.
